What NewsStand collects, what it does not, and what the advertising in it does. This policy covers the NewsStand app for Android.
The short version
You can read every story in NewsStand without an account. Signing in with Google is optional. We do not sell your data.
What we do collect is there to sign you in if you choose to, count which features are used, fix crashes, send notifications and show ads. The rest of this page says exactly what, and who else sees it.
Signing in with Google
When you first open the app, you can sign in with Google or tap Skip. If you sign in, Google and Firebase Authentication give us your name, email address, profile picture and an account ID. We use them only to keep you signed in. We never see your Google password, and we do not send you marketing emails.
What stays on your device
Whether you are signed in, your account ID, and when the app last asked about notifications are saved on your own phone. They are not sent to us. Uninstalling the app deletes them.
Reading the news
NewsStand shows headlines from news publishers, such as The Times of India. When you open a story, the publisher's own page loads inside the app. That page is run by the publisher, not by us, and the publisher may use cookies and collect data under its own privacy policy.
Analytics
The app uses Google Analytics for Firebase to learn which screens are opened and which features are used. It records things like screens viewed, taps on features, how ads load, your device model, operating system, app version, and your rough location (country or region). It uses an identifier for the app installation, not your name or email. We only see totals.
Crash reports
If the app crashes or something goes wrong, Firebase Crashlytics sends us a report: what went wrong in the code, your device model, operating system and app version, and an identifier for the installation. We use these only to fix bugs.
Notifications
To send news notifications, the app gets a notification token from Firebase Cloud Messaging. The token identifies the app on your phone, not you. You can turn notifications off at any time in your phone's settings.
Advertising
NewsStand is free because it shows ads. Ads come from Google AdMob, which may also pass an ad request to its partners ironSource (Unity) and AppLovin. To show and measure ads, these companies may use your device's advertising ID, your IP address, and information about how you interact with ads.
- In the European Economic Area, the UK and some other places, the app asks for your consent before personalised ads are shown. Until you answer, no ads are loaded.
- You can reset or delete your advertising ID in your phone's settings, under Google → Ads.
More about how Google uses data: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Permissions the app asks for
- Internet and network state — to load the news and to tell you when you are offline.
- Notifications — to send you news notifications, if you allow it.
The app does not ask for your contacts, location, camera, microphone or files.
Who else handles data
We use these companies to run NewsStand. Each one handles data only for the purpose described above, under its own privacy policy:
- Google — Google Sign-In, Firebase Authentication, Analytics, Crashlytics, Cloud Messaging and AdMob. Google's privacy policy.
- ironSource (Unity) — advertising. Unity's privacy policy.
- AppLovin — advertising. AppLovin's privacy policy.
We do not sell or rent your information, and we do not share it with anyone else unless the law requires it.
Security
Everything NewsStand sends and receives goes over an encrypted connection (HTTPS). Access to our data is limited to the people who run the app.
Children
NewsStand is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, write to us and we will delete it.
Your rights
- Delete everything stored on your phone by uninstalling the app.
- Turn off personalised ads and notifications as described above.
- Ask us for a copy of, or the deletion of, any data we hold about you — including your sign-in account — by writing to the address below from the email you signed in with.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Continuing to use NewsStand after a change means you accept the new version.
